The Shotokan Karate Club of Maryland is a member of the ISKF and has taught traditional Japanese karate in the Baltimore metropolitan area for over 40 years The club is a nonprofit entity dedicated to the propagation of traditional Japanese karate.

The Shotokan Karate Club of Maryland has a practice area of approximately 1,275 square feet The customized hardwood floor is of traditional Japanese design, firm but resilient. There are separate shower and locker room facilities for men and women. The pleasant, non threatening atmosphere helps students concentrate and achieve the tranquility that comes with consistent and dedicated training.

The minimum age for membership is eight. As beginners, children and adults train in separate classes. At the intermediate and advanced level, younger students may elect to train in adult classes. Our students come from all walks of life. We have college students, blue collar workers, executives and professionals of all types. Beginners are assigned a senior student who serves as a mentor and is responsible for explaining dojo etiquette and the system for training.

Chief instructor Najib Amin, an 8th degree black belt, has been a student of Master Okazaki since 1966. Other instructors include Dr. Farid Amin, 7th degree black belt with 44 years of experience, John Elliott 6th degree black belt with 42 years of experience and Shlomo Benamor 6th degree black belt with 34 years of experience. The staff also includes a compliment of well qualified instructors. In 1999, the club received a Mayoral citation for "the splendid quality of public service which you have rendered" and in 2003 was nominated by Baltimore Magazine as "Best of Baltimore for children". The club is committed to lifelong practice and good health, does not emphasize competitive karate. However, regional and national championships are conduced for younger, goal-oriented students. International events are also held bi-annually for those students who meet the eligibility requirements. Many members of the club have enjoyed successful competitive careers and are excellent resources for training and instruction.
